A Geometry Unit on Joyce Kilmer
This
unit plan is a series of mathematical lessons that will teach
students about the history Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and
reinforce sixth grade mathematical skills and computer skills.
During
this unit, students will work through problems that teach
them about the history of Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and
its present state.
Objectives:
Mathematics
(Sixth
Grade Mathematical Objectives)
Unit
Objective I - Goal 2:
The
learner will demonstrate an understanding and use of the properties
and relationships in geometry, and standard units of metric and
customary measurement.
2.11
- Convert measures of length,
area, capacity, weight, and time expressed in a given unit to
other units in the same measurement system.
2.12
- Estimate solutions to problems
involving geometry and measurement. Determine when estimates are
sufficient for the measurement situation.
2.13 - Analyze
problem situations, select appropriate strategies, and use an
organized approach to solve non-routine and increasingly complex
problems involving geometry and measurement. Use technology as
appropriate.
Unit
Objective II - Goal 3: The learner will demonstrate an understanding
of patterns, relationships, and algebraic representations.
3.05
- Use graphs and tables to represent
ordered pairs; describe the relationship; recognize both liner
and nonlinear relationships.
Technology
(Sixth
Grade Computer Skills)
Unit
Objective III - Goal 2: The
learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computer
and other technologies.
2.1
- Use keyboarding skills to increase
productivity and accuracy.
Unit
Objective IV- Goal 3: The learner will use a variety of technologies
to access, analyze, interpret, synthesize, apply, and communicate
information.
3.7
- Evaluate electronic information
from various sources as to validity, appropriateness, content,
and usefulness.
3.8 - Apply
search strategies to locate and retrieve information via telecommunications.
3.9 - Use
telecommunications to share and publish information.

Evaluation
- This
unit is valuable because it let students learn mathematical concepts
while integrating local history. It is very important for students
to understand how they can relate mathematical concepts to the real
world and especially to our Country's history.
- Written
reports, graphs, posters, recording sheets, and scoresheets will be
used to evaluate students work and knowledge of mathematical concepts
and history of Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.
Time
Period
This
unit can be taught in a 14-day timeframe where each class period is
50 minutes.
