GEOMETRY IN TRADITIONAL QUILT DESIGNS
Lesson One - TALK TO THE EXPERTS!

Unit will be introduced to students by a guest speaker .

EXPERTS IN THE FIELD OF TRADITIONAL QUILTING

Expert One: GERALDINE LOMINAC

Geraldine Lominac is a native of Cherokee County. In addition to performing the busy duties of wife, mother, and grandmother, "Gerry" is a seamstress and quiltmaker. She has very few examples of her work on hand because she gives them away to her children and grandchildren. She does regular quilt patterns, strip quilting and has also made a white-on-white quilt for her oldest granddaughter. She has volunteered to speak with students about her choices of colors, patterns and styles of her quilts.

ASSESSMENT:

Students will make an entry in their Math Journal that answers the following concerns:
1. What did you learn in class from the experts that you did not know before today?
2. What is the most interesting thing you heard about quilts from our visitors?
3. If I assigned you the chore of designing a quilt square that would describe you, what would you draw and why?

ASSIGNMENT:

Form groups of three or four students and create special "Thank You" cards with a specially designed quilt square on the front from each one in the group.
