      Lesson 7 - INTERDISCIPLINARY - SCIENCE

 

PRODUCING MATERIAL DYES

1. Students will use library and technology resources to find various ways to "safely" dye cotton material. Several examples are listed below.

2. Students should make a list of all suggestions and decide which methods could be accomplished in class.

3. Each class of students should select a different method and attempt to produce as many material dyes as possible.

4. Do NOT attempt to make a dangerous product (such as poisonous substances or toxic fumes, etc.) or use a dangerous method to produce the product.

 

Suggested methods of dying cotton materials
A. gathering special plant roots and boiling to produce dyes
B. leaf pounding
C. extracting juices from various fruits, berries and vegetables
