Lesson 6 - Creating a Tri-Fold Brochure About You!

Objectives:
DPI Standard Course of Study http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/curriculum/

Technology Competency Goals 2 and 3
English Competency Goals 1, 2, and 6

Focus and Review: As a way to sort of "pull it all together," students will create a brochure which highlights who they are!  Each student will use the information he/she discovered in the self study, relative interviews, and "Where I am From"  or "When I Was a Child" poem to create a brochure.

Teacher Input: Students will use Desktop Publishing, Microsoft Works or Word, Power Point, or another publishing tool to create a tri-fold or three panel brochure about themselves.  Each brochure must include the following information:

Student Instructions

1.  A digital photograph of yourself on the front panel and a quote (something wise you are often heard saying -- ha!ha!) You should also include their birth date on the front and their full name.

2.  The inside panel should include significant events or accomplishments in your life

3.  The middle panel should focus on national and local events at the time of your birth

4.  The far right inside panel should focus on significant national and local changes during your lifetime.  You may consult the Library of Congress web site for this information.  Be sure to correctly document this web site as a source at the bottom right hand corner of your brochure.

5.  One back panel should include your personal creed, "When I Was a Child" poem, or "Where I am From" poem.

6.  The other back panel should acknowledge significant people who have influenced the your life. *Students should feel to use colored, fancy fonts, clip art, borders, etc.

Guided Practice: The teacher will take students to the computer lab in the media center to help students create their brochure.  Students may save work to a disk to work independently at home.  One of the easiest ways for students to create their brochures is to simply go to a word processing program, click on format, click on columns, click on three.  Students should then be sure that they click on landscape, so their page will be turned sideways.  They will need to print on the front and back of one piece of paper when they print.  It helps if students design their brochure on notebook paper first.

Independent Practice: Students will be responsible for planning their brochure, and gathering the information necessary.  Students will finish their brochure at home if necessary.

Closure: Students will display their brochures in our classroom, and will include a copy in their portfolio.
