Projects - Mayland Computer Labs
On Monday, January 13, 2003 Mayland Community College and Congressman Charles Taylor (NC-11) will officially open a new computer lab at the college’s Burnsville campus. The lab is outfitted with 18 student computers, an instructor computer, a server, a scanner, and two printers. This equipment provides Mayland with a much needed computer lab.
The newly-equipped lab allows Mayland to offer all of its curricular and continuing education classes addressing basic computer and software skills separately from its applied science classes. The applied science classes utilize software such as computer aided design (CAD) which requires a lot of memory and is essential in teaching courses in landscaping, mechanical design and engineering. By using separate labs for general software classes and applied science classes, the machines are able to run more efficiently and additional classes are able to be offered.
Yancey County residents who benefit from this new lab include school teachers and area workers seeking additional or specialized training and displaced workers in need of retraining.
The funding for the lab came from a $40,000 Department of Education grant secured by Congressman Charles Taylor and administered by the Education and Research Consortium of the Western Carolinas (ERC). Congressman Taylor was instrumental in forming and funding the ERC, a non-profit organization which seeks to help the people and economy of WNC engage in and benefit from the new technology revolution. |
